Charles W. Elwell, Jr., D.M.D.

Dr. Elwell earned his undergraduate degree in predental studies, with honors, from the University of New Hampshire in 1971. While at UNH he played varsity football and was the captain of the lacrosse team. After postgraduate work in cardiovascular physiology at Southern Illinois University, he entered Tufts School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA, receiving the D.M.D. degree in 1976.

Having earned a United States Air Force ROTC commission in college, Dr. Elwell entered active duty in 1975. While serving in the Air Force he completed a four-year civilian residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery in 1985 at the University of Florida, University Hospital, Jacksonville. After tours of duty in Turkey, Massachusetts, South Dakota, Virginia, Korea and Florida, Dr. Elwell retired with the rank of Colonel in 1995. Dr. Elwell opened Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Associates in Shalimar in 1995.

Dr. Elwell’s clinical interests are focused on implants, dentoalveolar surgery and orthognathic surgery. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a Diplomat of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, a Fellow of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a member of the American Dental Association and Florida affiliates, a member of the Florida Dental Society of Anesthesiology, and a member of the Florida Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Dr. Elwell’s interests outside the office include hiking, skiing, and college sporting events. He is a private pilot with commercial and instrument ratings, and is presently building a RV7-A aircraft.

Dr. Elwell is a past Chief of Surgery at Twin Cities Hospital Niceville and is a member of the surgical staffs of Twin Cities Hospital, Sacred Heart Hospital of the Emerald Coast and the HealthSouth Emerald Coast Surgery Center.

Dr. Elwell and his wife Betsy reside in Destin. Their grown children Chuck and Tara live and work in Atlanta and New York City respectively.
